What’s Really Inside a Honey Bee Hive?

A look behind the buzz.
If you’ve ever had honey bees move into a wall, tree, shed, soffit, or block opening, you’ve probably had the same thought most people do:
“How many bees are actually in there?”
Fair question.
From the outside, a honey bee colony usually does not look like much. You may only see a few bees coming and going through a tiny crack. Maybe they are slipping behind a shutter, disappearing into the corner of a roofline, or using a gap so small you would never guess anything serious was happening behind it.

Then the structure is opened carefully during removal, and suddenly there it is.
An entire hidden world.
Sheets of honeycomb.
Thousands of honey bees.
Golden honey stored away for later.
Pollen packed into wax cells like little bits of stained glass.
Baby bees developing in every stage.
A queen quietly moving through the colony while everyone else gets to work.
That is the part most people never get to see firsthand, especially because we perform our removals at night for safety and better results. The inside of a hive never stops being amazing.

It’s More Than a Hive. It’s a City.
One of the biggest misconceptions about honey bees is that they are just a bunch of insects living together.
A healthy honey bee colony works more like a small city. Every bee has a role, and those roles change as the colony needs them.
Some bees are caring for the next generation.
Some are building wax.
Some are storing food.
Some are guarding the entrance.
Some are fanning their wings to help regulate temperature.
Others are flying out into the world looking for nectar, pollen, water, and plant resins.
There is no little bee manager standing there with a clipboard, which frankly feels rude because some of us would appreciate that level of organization.
Still, somehow, thousands of individual bees work together so smoothly that the whole colony almost functions like one living organism.
They communicate through scent, movement, vibration, and pheromones. They respond to what the colony needs. They adjust. They adapt.
That is what makes them so fascinating.
A single honey bee is tiny.
A colony is a force.

The Honeycomb: Nature’s Storage System
Once honey bees choose a place to live, worker bees begin building comb from beeswax.
That comb is made up of those familiar six-sided hexagons, and the shape is not random. Hexagons are strong, efficient, and allow bees to build a lot of storage space while using as little wax as possible.
That matters because wax is expensive for bees to make. It takes a lot of energy.
So when you see a big sheet of comb, you are looking at serious work.
Inside the comb, you may find several different things:
Honey, which is stored food for the colony
Pollen, which provides protein for growing bees
Nectar, which will eventually become honey
Eggs, larvae, and pupae, which are the next generation of bees
Sometimes all of those things are sitting just inches apart.
A hive is not random. It is organized around what the colony needs most: food, space, warmth, protection, and babies.

The Nursery at the Heart of the Hive
Most people think of a hive as the place where bees make honey.
That is true, of course.
But for the bees, the hive is also a nursery.
At the center of a healthy colony is an area called the brood nest. This is where the queen lays eggs and where young bees develop before becoming adults.
The process starts with one tiny egg placed inside a wax cell. After a few days, that egg hatches into a larva. Worker bees feed and care for the larvae until they are ready to be sealed under a wax cap. Beneath that cap, they continue developing until they emerge as adult bees.
So when we are relocating a colony, we are not just trying to “get the bees.”
We are trying to preserve the future of the colony.
The queen matters.
The brood matters.
The comb matters.
If the colony is going to survive after relocation, the developing bees need to be handled carefully too.

Meet the Queen
People tend to picture the queen as this massive bee sitting in the middle of the hive like royalty.
She is important, absolutely.
She is usually not nearly as dramatic as people expect.
She is longer than the worker bees, moves a little differently, and is often surrounded by attendants. During the busiest parts of the year, a healthy queen can lay well over a thousand eggs a day.
Her job is not to boss everyone around.
Her job is to keep the colony growing.
Finding her during a relocation is always one of the best moments. Sometimes she is right where we expect her to be. Sometimes she is tucked away on the very last piece of comb we check, because apparently queens also enjoy being difficult.
Either way, locating and safely moving the queen is a huge part of giving the colony its best chance after removal.

The Workers Do… Basically Everything
Almost every honey bee you see flying from flower to flower is a female worker bee.
Worker bees are exactly what they sound like.
They work.
A lot.
What is especially cool is that a worker bee does not keep the same job her whole life.
Her role changes as she ages.
When she is young, she usually stays inside the hive. She may clean empty cells, help feed developing larvae, tend to the queen, or assist with hive maintenance.
As she gets older, she may begin producing wax, building comb, receiving nectar from foragers, packing pollen, guarding the entrance, or helping cool the hive by fanning her wings.
Later in life, she becomes a forager.
That is when she leaves the hive to collect nectar, pollen, water, and plant resins.
One tiny bee.
A whole lifetime of different jobs.
Honestly, she has a better resume than most of us.

What About the Drones?
Drones are the male bees in the colony.
They do not collect nectar.
They do not build comb.
They do not guard the entrance (hence their lack of stinger).
Their main purpose is to mate with queens from other colonies, which helps support healthy genetic diversity in honey bee populations.

Why We Work at Night
This is one of the things that makes our removals a little different.
We perform honey bee removals at night because it gives the best results for the bees, our team, and the property owner.
During the day, many of the forager bees are out working. They are flying, collecting food, and coming and going from the hive. If a colony is removed during the day, a lot of those bees may return later to find the hive gone.
At night, most of the colony is home and settled.
That means we can relocate more of the bees together, reduce the number left behind, and work in a calmer environment. It is safer for us, safer for the bees, and usually leads to a cleaner, more complete removal.
Some beekeepers do daytime removals, and every beekeeper has their own process.
For us, nighttime work has consistently given the best results.
The tradeoff is that homeowners usually are not standing there watching the whole thing happen, which is also for the best because bee removals are not exactly a casual spectator sport.
